When are they going to find out?

I am going on twenty years as a nurse, and I did come down with a mild case of pneumonia and so I am sitting in my house and I am stewing. What am I stewing about, you may ask? The fact the hospital puts on a donation ball every year so they can raise money in order to fund research projects, buildings, etc. Guess what the focus of the ball was this year? Oncology! Guess what I specialize in and did not have a clue that oncology was what money was being raised for in which the donations would be going towards? My own specialty. Our inpatient oncology department received TWO tickets, and that was because there was extra. Just Two!

How far do I go with this. Do hospitals know nurses are the fundamental aspect of the running of corporations? If they had no nurses, how would oncology patient’s be taken care of? Why are we the last ones they think about? Why does healthcare say they are losing money when WE KNOW the experimental drugs they try on patient’s cost millions? Let me give you a run down on an expense and it might have gone up. When I initiate a blood transfusion, guess how much it costs the patient. EIGHT hundred dollars for just starting it. Trust me, hospitals are funded. Where does the money go?

I am so disappointed in corporations where the nurses WHO REPRESENT the foundation of the hospital being tossed to the side. When do we say enough is enough? Well, Brooke, why do you keep going? I keep going because I connect with human life and hope that I make a difference when people are at their most vulnerable. Hospitals should be ashamed for not allowing the nurses to be celebrated for taking care of the most ill and the most scared with their new/ongoing cancer diagnosis. Who profits? Definitely not the nurses. I did see administration in the pictures smiling and having fun. When is it our turn? Sorry, crumble cookie doesn’t cut it. We the nurses, are there TWENTY-FOUR hours a day making sure your patients live while you trial and error, your pharmaceuticals. How much do you think pharmaceutical companies pay hospitals to try their drug? However, we are still the sickest country in the world. If vaccines actually worked, why don’t they get rid of viruses totally with one shot. WHY DO YOU NEED MULTIPLE DOSES? Different strains Brooke, that’s why.

People, wake up! Start questioning the system. Ask yourselves why we are the unhealthiest country in the world but spend the most on our population. What do you think would be the solution for not notifying the nurses of the fun event, celebrating all of our efforts, in order to keep you alive?
